Are Gender Reboots Here To Stay?

How much more can Hollywood squeeze out of gender reboots? Opinion for VillainLabs by Rogue Saint.

The answer to our title is very simple. Yes. But simplicity of that answer is not exactly why the question has been asked among movie fans. Many want to go deeper, and possibly understand why gender reboots as well as other types of reboots, like race reboots, will continue to be a viable option for Hollywood studios. The answers go well beyond entertainment. Movies are entertainment, but more importantly so, they're big business with a foray in societal changes and politics. These are the main reasons why gender reboots will keep playing in the theater near you.

For years Hollywood has been attempting to paint a picture of itself as an altruistic giant that will move the fossil mountains of patriarchal and racial history and shatter them into pieces. But is it really altruism and a desire to make the world a better place the reason behind the change in Tinseltwon? Or is there a possibility that gender rebooting is about jumping on the band wagon that is now almost in full speed? I'm not three hundred years old with a wisdom of a wizard from your favorite fantasy story, but in everything I've ever seen money and interest drub altruism. At all times.

Since 1945 percentage of women in overall workforce in the US is on a rise. Also on the rise, albeit still not equal to men, are the women's salaries. And in 2015 percentage of women with college degree surpassed that of men. With number of marriages in decline, as well as number of divorces up, you get a large group of consumers that you must target if you're in the entertainment business. It's simple, women are earning their money and have their own choice. Some of these trends replicate toward growing diversity in US population. However, let's get to the money part. Will & Grace may have worked wonders but the show came almost a decade after big Wall Street players concluded it to be bad for overall money flow if LGBT population was to be kept shut down. Simply LGBT population counted numerous wealthy individuals, just like women and racial minorities do. Big money, not altruism, forces societal changes while marketing helps ease the transition. Remember that tiny artwork in the Big Apple. Yes, big money put it there while marketing ironed the transition toward the words we so desire to feel - empowerment and freedom.

While personally I'm not a fan, there's nothing wrong with gender reboots being part of the theater line up. The consumer demand does exist. However, the way gender reboots are made and advertised rises some eyebrows. Hollywood's blatant foray into politics is head scratching to put it nicely. There's nothing wrong with having political views and expressing them, but the politics have changed. It has become the reality show of exclusive statements and extreme positions with a tectonic drop in between instead of the middle ground. While there was a time when courageous had called themselves politicians, modern politics fields the teams  of charlatans and simpletons involved in a grotesque mud wrestling before your matinee TV news freak shows. The reasons any studio would drag their >$100M gender reboot through modern political pandemonium is beyond perplexing. Gender reboots largely fail to carry their social-warrior Velcro beyond Pacific-Atlantic borders and remain dependent on domestic gross.

The financial success of a reboot depends on many things. In future, budgets should definitely be lower than $100M, I'd even go to the point of less than $50M but the latter seems impossible. Marketing department of such a movie should design a strategy that races on a speedway far above political zombie land. Creatively, gender reboots suffer from the same disease as their parents - reboots. Simply plastering a different face into the same story and dialog seems to bury even the most expensive reboots. But how much to change the story to fit new gender yet keep the familiarity and offer a unique perspective is a million dollar question. The easy answer is don't do a gender reboot. However, we all know there is always somebody in the executive branch of Hollywood that will flip the green light. A Fallen Hero Of The Social Wars badge shines brightly on the red carpet events and interviews.

So what to do if you are a consumer disliking the gender reboots?  Should you be mad that this affair will go on? Should you go on Twitter rants and make sure Hollywood gets an earful? You can do as you please, but in this instance being mad is a waste of time and energy. Hollywood won't hear your screaming anyway, the studios have been deaf for many years now. They do fret over lighter pockets, though. Gender reboots are just a tiny bit of a large increase of entertainment blinking towards our retinas. The total number of produced works for film, TV, and streaming is rising. Consider gender reboots a loaf of bread in your supermarket that carries over 20 different types of breads. If you think that loaf is trash, just move on.

Your neighborhood villain.
